This paper describes high power capability of sodium sulfur (NAS) batteries. Two types of high power discharge were conducted : (1) battery module A which is composed of 320 cells was discharged at a rate of higher than normal power every one hour for 30 seconds during the half rated discharging and the rated charging, and (2) battery module A and battery module B which is composed of 352 cells were discharged at higher than rated power for more than five minutes at the start of discharge. The results shows that (1) battery module A is able to discharge at three times higher than rated power for 30 seconds at all of the peak shaving operation, (2) battery module A is able to discharge at three times higher than rated power for 30 minutes, and (3) battery module B is able to discharge at five times higher than rated power for five minutes.
