There are many fields of materials, machines, and system in "The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers". And, there are many excellent tools for characterization of materials with high brilliance x-ray in SPring-8. Then, it is expected for applications on research and development on various materials such as metals, semiconductors, ceramics, and polymers for machines or devices. Now, x-ray diffraction and XAFS (X-ray Absorption Fine Structure) are used for structural analysis with properties of synchrotron radiation such as selectivity of x-ray energy and very hard x-ray, and an imaging technique with x-ray refraction contrast method is also used for observation of crack in structural materials. Near future, other excellent tools as x-ray micro-beam or x-ray fluorescence analysis should be used for researchers on mechanical engineers.
