The circumstances surrounding press dies have drastically changed these few years. Requests for shortening lead-time, reducing die costs were the major topics. At Toyota, we have started solid data design using Pro/E in the press die design field earlier than other competitors. At the beginning of 1998, solid cad design, including outsource design, has reached 100%. Taking a look at the overall manufacturing process however, we saw a world where drawings consisted the basis of work. In the FM process, most of the models were made by hand. In the NC process, a lot of time was consumed to make the data. In the process planning and cost estimation process, the work was done based on drawings uneasy to read. Thus manufacturing process in whole was inefficient. In 1998, we have started up a project to standardize model based manufacturing to eliminate drawings. In the early stages, there were a lot of opposition and resistance from the design division, the manufacturing division, and vendors. However by solving each problem one by one, in May 2000, all of our dies, including the latter processes of the body side member, which is the most difficult ones, have turned to drawing less design. At the same time, we have developed an automatic die cost estimating system which collects data from the solid data attributes, a model viewer system which replaces drawings, and a system which controls design issue. Also activities such as, automation of the FM process, reduction of NC process man-hours, and enhancement of continuous unmanned machining was done. From these systems and activities, we have achieved a great success.
