In this paper an attempt is made to establish an empirical formula which covers all the results of the experiments ever made on rectangular weirs with complete or slightly incomplete contractions. The new proposed formula deduced from the results of experiments made by Frese, Steward and Long-well, Yendo, Francis, Fteley and Stearns, Hamilton enables us to compute the coefficients of discharge within an error not exceeding ± 15%, excepting abnormal cases. If the formula be a little modified, it becomes more suitable for shorter weirs. In the formula the complete contraction of the stream flowing over the weir is expressed by a function of the ratio of head to length of the weir. For the bottom effect on the contraction a correction factor involving the height of the crest above the channel bed is introduced. As hitherto has been done by some authors, the effect of viscosity on the vertical contraction, when the head is low, is expressed by a factor involving the reciprocal of head. Besides, the effect of the velocity of approach in the channel is, as usual, taken into account. The functions occurring in the formula are so chosen as to make them very simple in form, and the significant figures of the constants also are chosen as few as possible, so that it may be used very conveniently in practice.
