1. A new material called "Phenolite" which is an organic compound of phenol and formaline made in the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research, Japan, is introduced for a photo-elastic specimen instead of celluloid. Stress-optical sensibility of phenolite as compaired with celluloid is determined by monochromatic light of mercury arc, and found to be five times as great as that of the latter. Elastic properties are also determined, Young's modulus obtained being 34100-39500 kg/cm^2 and the elastic limit three times as great as that of the celluloid. Actual examples of stress studies are given and considerable accuracy is obtained. 2. Photo-elastic study has usually been limited for the plane specimens. The author tried the experiment with a three dimensional beam having wedge section. The loaded beam is immersed in carbon bisulphide having the same index of refraction with phenolite. The result is considered to prove the practicability of this method. 3. Columns of phenolite having various sections are heated up to 130℃ and suddenly quenched in water of 20℃. Thin specimens are taken from the centre of the column perpendicular to the axis, and stresses of the section are studied.
