The relationship between bronchial asthma and respiratory infection was studied from the aspect of the bacterial flora present in the respiratory tract. According to the Swineford's classification, 101 cases of bronchial asthma may be divided into three types, the atopi ctype, infective type and those which cannot by classified in either and are called the mixed type. These types were investigated by examination of throat swabs and sputa. The subjects also included 64 cases of chronic bronchitis and emphysema and 121 healthy individuals and the results were comparatively examined. The following results were obtained: 1) Flora of the throat swab: The rate of isolation of Hemophilus and β-hemolytic Streptococcus in infectious asthma, Staphylococcus aureus, Pneumococcus and Hemophilus in the mixed type was higher in the stage of attack than in the symptome-free state. 2) Flora of the sputum: The rate of isolation of Hemophilus in infectious asthma, chronic bronchitis and emphysema in the exacerbation was always higher than in the symptome-free state. 3) Comparison of the results of cultivation of the throat swab and the sputum revealed that the Hemophilus, which is isolated higher percentage in infectious asthma, chronic bronchitis and emphysema in the stage of exacerbation, are present in the lower respiratory tract rather than in the upper respiratory tract. The above findings suggest that the bacterial flora of the upper respiratory tract is closely related to bronchial asthma. The presence of β-hemolytic Streptcoccus in the upper respiratory tract is related to infectious asthma of Swineford's classification but Hemophilus present in the lower respiratory tract is believed to be even more closely involved in the exacerbation of infectious asthma.
