The speed of solidification of a paraffin, n-octadecane (melting point : 28.0℃), in a copper tube with the inside diameter of 30.8 mm was studied experimentally. Also, the heat transfer rates were measured by heat flux meters on the wall of an acrylic tube. The wall temperatures of the tubes were variable at the rate of less than 1℃ per minute. Both of the results for solidification agreed well with the analytical results which were solved using the assumption of quasi-state. For melting, the experimental and the analytical results agreed each other initially. The heat transfer rates on the wall, later, did not become uniform circumferentially, being much smaller on the top of the wall than on the bottom due to the effect of the natural convection in the liquid state of the phase change maeterial.
