Carbon dioxide transport is facilitated by the simultaneous diffusion of bicarbonate ions at lower partial pressures of carbon dioxide. In the microporous membrane oxygenator, the carbon dioxide facilitated transport occurs in the neighborhood of the membrane due to the large gas permeability of the membrane. The numerical calculations of carbon dioxide transport carried out in this study reveal that the overall Sherwood number increases by 80% due to the effect of facilitated diffusion and shows fairly good agreement with the results of ex vivo experiments with the microporous PTFE membrane oxygenator.
