The effectiveness of an inorganic coating to ensure the weldability of tufftrided steel is investigated by Co_2 are welding, friction welding and tension test, using specimens of SM50A and S15CK steel partially protected from tufftriding by the coating. The results obtained are summarized as follows : (1) In the CO_2 are welded joint, the tensile strength of the tufftrided steel after 90minutes was remarkably reduced due to porosity and lack of penetration. But the anti-tufftrided steel was as strong as the non-tufftrided steel regardless of tufftriding time. (2) The porosity of the tufftrided steel was influenced to a greater extent by the compound layer than by the diffusion layer. (3) Friction welding of the anti-tufftrided steel was fully possible under the same condition as was welding with non-tufftrided steel. However, in case of long time tufftrided steel it was difficult to establish welding conditions and ensure strength.
