In recent years, the study of a forgotten thinker, Ando Shoeki has made a remarkable development through the new materials discovered in Odate, Akita Prefecture, and through the deepening of the study itself. However, much of the formative factors and the process of his thought in the milieu of his age is yet to be known. And thus, he still stands isolated from his contemporaries. With special references to the formative factors and the process of his thought development, and to the significance and the roles of his works in the context of his age, this short treatise focuses on the following two points : (1)To explore and trace the innermost part of Shoeki's medical philosophy to its sources. Specifically, to demonstrate Shoeki's naturalistic view of medicine, his etiology, his medical views, and his moral views stemming from the philosophy of Lao-tze and Chung-tze ; all these being the constituents of the fertile soil for the making of his own philosophy. (2)To look into the formative factors of Shoeki's philosophy in the latter half of the eighteentn century, particularly in the critical situation of medical circles centering on the Horeki period (1751-1764). Specifically, to bring to light the formative factors of Shoeki's thought through questions such as the authorship of "Naikei" or the authenticity of its theory (these questions being posed in the setting of the transitionary world of medicine in which the collapse of the medical system of "Naikei" and the establishment of "Koho" medicine were in progress), and also through a survey of the controversies as to the question of the "Un-ki" or the "Dual Fire" posed in medical circles.
