近世大坂道修町の商人と「イエ」 : 鍵屋茂兵衛家のあり方から

In the present paper the author conducts an analysis of one Kagiya Mohei 鍵屋茂兵衛, a resident of the town of Doshomachi 道修町, Osaka and a member of the herbal medicine broker's guild, in order to examine urban townsfolk and their formation of socialgroups. In the first section, the author clarifies the way in which and reasoning behind the large establishment managed by Mohei's family came into, existence. In section two, the author examines the relationship of those families that regarded themselves to be branches of Mohei's main family. These families took over the management of a portion of Mohei's estate and some aspects of his medicine brokerage, in an attempt to keep the business going lest succession problems ruin the main family. In other words, the main family did not merely reign over its branches, but demanded that the branches work actively to support its existence. In section three, the author shows that branch families not only worked to support the main family, but also fellow branch families. Moreover, Mohei's family (known as ie イエ) was organized along the lines of fictional (non-sanguinary) kinship relations, centered around the people running the brokerage, but also including who-lesalers, etc. in the herbal medicine business and merchants in other types of brokerages, As a result, the author concludes that by virtue of the main branch being so involved in the business activities of its branch families, these families were able to diversify into different industries and form the complicated web of vertical and horizontal ties that tied them into a "family". In conclusion, the author states that the case of Doshomachi is hardly an isolated one, for in other townshipd such merchant families that were formed on the basis of non-sanguinary kinship ties can not be identified. Moreover, this family form also extends to social groups other than merchants, suggesting the need for a more comprehensive approach to the diffusion of the "ie" organization in premodern Japan.
