The method to determine the cavitation number for cavitation-limited flow condition in a water jet pump was theoretically and experimentally studied. Through visualization of the cavity bubbles, it was observed that a shock wave was developed in the diffuser once the cavitation-limited condition was reached. By analyzing the flow pattern, it is shown that the net positive suction head is in proportion to the velocity head of mean velocity in the throat, and is a function of caliber ratio and flow ratio. The prediction of the performance drop, in cavitation-limited flow at the off-design condition, is shown to be possible.
