The stress-strain relations of granular materials for the case of unloading have been theoretically deduced. The elastic recovery in unloading at the part of contact of grains which has been deformed plastically in loading is considered. Then the relation between the force and the displacement of elastic recovery at the part of contact is sought, and the relation between the force and the relative displacement of the grains in contact is obtained. The result is averaged by integrating it around one grain, which gives the stress-strain relations. Consequently the theoretical basis for calculation of the elastic recovery or the residual stress in unloading is obtained.
