Dynamic loads on the spur gear teeth are calculated assuming that gear tooth is a cantilever with uniform cross section. An approximate solution is developed considering only the fundamental mode of vibration of the beam. The results are checked against those obtained previously by the numerical integration and are found to be satisfactory for the practical purpose. The influences of the moment of inertia of gears, impact velocity and the mean transmitting load on the maximum values of impact load are illustrated graphically. The effects of shear deformation and rotatory inertia of the beam are also examined. These effects result in a decrease in the maximum value of the impact loads, but the decrease remains within 20%. Furthermore, there seems to be a statical linear relation between the maximum impact load and the maximum bending moment at the root of tooth.
