Few Theoretical researches on the stress distribution within a working roll have been reported. Practically working rolls are affected not only by the pressure of contact, the frictional force, the driving torque and the bending moment but also by the generated heat, so that Hertz's theory of contact will be unable to be readily applied. To simplify the loading conditions, stresses within a cross section of the roll were calculated as the plane stress under the conditions of the sine shaped pressure distribution curve along the arc of contact and of the driving torque around the axis of the roll, results of which were verified experimentally about the tangential stresses on the surface of the roll, and ascertained by the observation of the spalling samples from skins of fractured rolls.
