The bursting tests under internal pressure and external pressure were carried out on the hollow cylinders which made of cast iron and graphite bars, the relations between the thickness of the cylinder wall and the bursting pressure were investigated. In this paper the experimental results of them are shown and discussed about it. Listing the results obtained by the investigation of the experiment they are as follows ; - 1. The every fracture of the cylinder under internal pressure or external prssure takes place on the surface which is parallel to the axis of the cylinder, but these fractures are the plane through its center when the cylinder is subjected to internal pressure and the curved surface inclining at forty-five degrees against its radius when it is subjected to external pressure. 2. Judging from the direction of the fracture it is clear that the bursting under internal pressure of the cylinder is induced by tangential stress and that under external pressure by shearing stress. 3. The relation between the thickness of the cylinder wall and the bursting pressure is subjected to mean stress theory in the comparatively thin-walled cylinder. But the bursting in the comparatively thick-walled cylinder occurs at the pressure which is lower than that expressed by mean stress theory.
