Analysis of Two-Dimensional Thermoelastic Problem in Doubly-Connected Region by Physical Analogy : Thermal Stress for a Solid with Hollow Square Profile

Following the previous paper which studied on the two-dimensional thermal stress problem on a solid of rectangular profile, this paper presents an investigation on the thermal stress which takes place on a solid of hollow square profile with initial uniform temperature when the interior temperature is suddenly elevated to a given temperature, while the surrounding temperature is kept unchanged. From the results of this investigation, the general tendency as to the nature of the thermal stress generated in these problems was understood. Experiments of physical analog which utilize a sintered metal network and a hollow ball grid were carried out also in this study, and to determine the appropriateness of this analogical method on the two-dimensional thermal problems, the results are compared with those of the finite-differences method. As for this analogical method, though there still was a certain delay in time as in all previous analog experiments, the present test yielded more satisfactory results. Thus, it is understood that the analogical method is satisfactorily applicable to two dimenstional thermal stress problems.
