Aluminum single crystals having various orientations were scratched with a diamond cone stylus to clarify the deformation mechanism of finished surface by machining. the results are as follows: both the scratched force and the scratched track width periodically fluctuate in accordance with the change of scratching direction even if the crystal plane is identical. The angle of slip lines observed around the scratched tracks is in good agreement with that calculated from the active slip system. Moreover, the finite element method is applied to analyze the deformation process in surrounding of scratched track. The information suggests that the finite element method is useful for the analysis of scratched deformation.
