Tire Squeal

In this report, three kinds of experiments dealing with squeal noises produced by tire during severe cornering are reported. One experiment used an actual vehicle, one only a single tire and the third used a piece of rubber tread. Tire squeal occurs when the sliding velocity of a tire reaches 1.1 - 1.7 m/s. These values are dependent on the velocity of a vehicle, but independent of vertical load, groove depth, rib width and tread pattern. Squeal noise occurs due to the self-excited vibration of tire tread and its frequency is determined only by the thickness of the vibrating part of the tread and is nearly in inverse proportion to rubber thickness. High squeal frequency occurs with worn tires. Squeal with an actual vehicle occurs when all four tires begin to skid and the driving conditions under which it occurs can be calculated easily.
