The instability of long columns subjected to distributed conservative loading is studied theoretically and experimentally. The equilibrium equation is solved by assuming an infinite power series solution. The first two critical lengths of the columns and the corresponding buckling modes are calculated for six typical sets of boundary conditions. The stability of a long vertically cantilevered column is investigated experimentally by the static and dynamic methods. The experimental results and the theoretical predictions show very good agreement. The second buckling mode is also demonstrated experimentally to verify the theoretical results.
