The effects of surface rolling on the fatigue strength were investigated with the grooved specimens made of brass and duralmin. The bottoms of grooves were rolled with varying pressures by a roller which has a thickness half the width of groove. In the reversed twisting fatigue tests, fatigue strength (10^7 reversals) was improved 81% in brass, or 43% in duralmin by the most suitable rolling pressure. With the brass specimen, the effect of surface rolling on the improvement of fatigue strength (10^7 reversals) was far better than with mild steel. Even in the case of the highest improvement rate of fatigue strength (10^7 reversal) in the brass specimen, hair cracks due to rolling were found on the rolled surface under microscope.
