When the tooth-forms of worms or wheels are given, the tooth-forms of mating gears are found as the envelopes of the given gears in motion. The surfaces of contact or contact lines can also be found in this same prcedure. There are many ways pf mathematical treatment in making envelopes, but the one, in which the original figure is expressed according to rectangular co-ordinates, and the condition of envelope is obtained as the Jacobian of the expression of the moving figure is put equal to zero, will be most convenient. In this paper, there are discussed on some tooth-forms and surfaces of contact of cylindrical worms, globoid worms and enveloping worms, which are thought formerly difficult to treat.
