The automatic dynamic balancing (ADB) mechanism for a rotating system has been receiving extensive interest, especially for its application in DVD and CD-ROM industry. Some factors, such as friction, are not taken into account in existing models and they may affect the achievement of ADB as the system becomes smaller and a very low residual imbalance is required. A theoretical model of an ADB system with friction is introduced and analyzed in this paper. The equations of motion are derived and solved for the time responses of the vibration amplitudes and the correction ball positions. The results suggest that the correction balls may not reach the desired positions due to friction and a total compensation for the imbalance may be difficult to come by.
