Challenges posed by reduced dimensions of structural elements to the thermal design of micro-mechanical systems are summarised. These challenges arise from two sources; one is the demand on dimensional stringency in assembling micro-scale elements, and the other is the geometric complexity in the internal organisation of systems. The techniques of geometric modeling will have to be incorporated in the design analysis in order to systematically deal with geometric uncertainties and complexity. In a proposed methodology detailed numerical analysis is performed on a set of geometric models and the importance of different geometric parameters is identified from a body of solutions. Some examples are drawn from the work on thermal management of compact electronic equipment.
