So-called "organ-choice", ambiguous in terminology and concept, originally refers to a somatic compliance in organ-neurosis. It covers only one aspect of the problem of constitutional make-up inherent in an individual organism, that is the whole constellation of traits, morphological, physiological and psychological, which is associated with liability to certain diseases. From this view-point some clinical data were demonstrated ; in case of gastric ulcer, for example, it was regarded as a partial expression of general morbid conditions, the organ in question being bound to modify the phenotypical appearance of the organism. The finding that the physique of paranoid schizophrenics was predominantly of pyknomorphic type suggested a pathoplastic effect of the pynic-cyclothymic constitution on the schizophrenics process. Observations on congenitally deaf schizophrenics indicated that deprivation of one sensory channel had altered the whole constellation of the organism. In this connection, a critical difference between visual and auditory hallucination was discussed. In conclusion, emphasis was laid on the patients own constitution instead of on any etiology of the disease.
