The three component compressed glass-to-metal seal is one of typical hermetic seals. Generally, the outer rings have considerably greater thermal expansion than the glass, so that compression is produced in the glass. The thermal expansion of the central rod usually matches with that of the glass, but this is not always necessary under certain conditions. In many cases, such seals have considerably shorter axial length than diameter. This study was carried out to find means of stress analysis suitable for such seals and to ascertain the agreement between the calculation and the observation. Radial and circumferential stresses were calculated assuming the axial stress is unrestrictedly relaxed to the both end of the seals, then compared with the result of photoelastic measurements on sereval kinds of seals. This analysis was proved to be aplicable to the stress analysis of hermetic seals with considerably short axial length except special cases.
