Granules containing weak, medium and strong organic binder systems were spray dried and the effects of bin der and forming pressure on pressed bars' green and sintered strength were investigated. Green strengths were found to improve with increasing compaction pressure for all granules. Higher compaction pressure increased the sintered strength for the strong case but did not increase the sintered strengths of the medium case and lowered the sintered strengths for the weak case. SEM observations revealed that the fracture origins in the strong case originated primarily from un laminated intergranular flaws which can be improved by higher compaction pressure. The fracture origins in the medium and weak cases are mixtures of unlamented ed intergranular flaws and pressing damages, in which case increased compaction pressure can lower strength. Higher compaction pressure would only in crease sintered strength if the dominant flaw population is intergranular flaws. In cases where the granules are relatively weak, sintered strength may be in creased by decreasing compaction pressure.
