This study was undertaken to evaluate the teratogenic effect of a single dose of methoxyacetic acid (MAA) on mice at different stages of gestation days. MAA was injected intraperitoneally at 1, 1.5, or 2 mmol/kg body weight in pregnant mice on day 7, 9, 11 or 13 of gestation. Fetuses were collected on day 18 of gestation and were examined for intrauterine death, fetal weight, and external, internal and skeletal malformations. Findings revealed that there were significant increases in embryonic resorptions and significant decreases in fetal weight. MMA caused abnormalities of the limb and hemorrhaging when administered on day 9 of gestation. Hydrocephalus was observed when dams were treated on day 9, 11 and 13, and hydronephrosis developed if treated on day 11 of gestation. Skeletal malformations were found in the thoracic vertebrae, lumbar vertebrae, ribs and sternum, particularly after treatment on day 9 of gestaion.
