The mechanism underlying the development of neurological disorders, such as impaired mentation, lethargy and asterixis, remains unclear. In order to study whether uremia affects gene expression in cerebrum, we utilized a technique to display the differential expression of mRNAs by a polymerase chain reaction. We found that uremic conditions caused by a two-stage 5/6 nephrectomy resulted in either an increase or decrease in certain mRNA species. The expression of one gene, in particular, named UAB3, was greatly suppressed under uremia. Sequencing analysis and homologic evaluation revealed that this UAB3 gene is novel. Since the technique employed enables only the sequence of the 3'-end to be covered, cloning and analyzing the complete range of the cDNA may provide an important infomation towards clarifying the mechanism involved in the development of disorders in the central nervous system in nremic patients.
