The suprarenal cortex cells are generally believed to consist exclusively of lipoid cells, but it is also maintained that they are also associated with "summer cells", as has been described by Stilling. In the cytological study of the suprarenal cortex cells of the hypophysectomized frog, which have been submitted to the Haidenhain's iron-hematoxylin staining, many transitional forms were observed between lipoid and summer cells, while in some cases a mitosis was detected in summer cells. In the hypophysectomized frog lipoid cells decrease remarkably and promptly, while summer cells increase in number. According to the present study summer cells are believed to be originated from lipoid cells, so that the suprarenal cortex cells of the frog are presumably of the same origin.
