By constrtrcting a model from the Coulomb interaction among electric charges, the underbarriermotion of an electron in a small tttnnel junction is investigated. Because of the small .junctioncapacitance, tunneling electrons interact with electrornagnetic (LM) modes in the leads as wellas surface plasmons on the .jtxnction electrodes. When the ttnnneling tirne 'l"f. is much greaterthan the inverse of the surface plasmon f'requency but negligibly srnall in comparison with otherrelevant time scales, the model reprodtrces the result obtained by the tunneling Hanailtonianformalism. With increasing Qr(, where Q is the characteristic frequency of the UNI modes, theprobability of inelastic tunneling rapidly decreases, and in the litnit Q-rt ) l the only effect ofthe Coulomb interaction on tunmeling at zero tenaperature is to renormalize the barrier potential.
