Atomic Rearrangement and Magnetism of[Fe/Cu] Multilayers on Cu(001)

Multilayers of [7ML Fe /l4ML Cu] on Cu(001) were prepared. A rearrangernent of Fe atoms isobserved, when Fe is deposited on a flat Cu-buffer surfttce, The degree of rearrangement dependson the flatness of the buf['er surface. The structure of the rearrangernent is 3D-(n x l), n = 2,3, 4, 5 etc. and the mean magnetic moment of the Fe atorns in a satnple which contains manyrearranged atorns is about 0.7 p5, while that of a sample rnainly witla fce structure is 1.6 jt5.The various values of Fe rnornents for rnultilayers with the same design are corresponding to themixture of the 3D-(72 x l) and fcc structures in the film. The fcc structure of Fe is obtainedwhen Fe is deposited on a rough Cu-butler strrface.
