The normal-incommensurate phase transition of K2ZIlCl4 and LX(CH3)4l2ZIlCl4 were studiedby the linear birefringence method for the deterrnining critical exponent, f3. The critical linearbirefringence behavior can well be described by standard 3-d XY model over the temperaturerange 10 '< (Tt - T)/Tt< 10 '. The effect of symmetry breaking was not found in bothK2ZIlCl4 and UN(CH3)4]2ZI1Cl4. So we can determine the critical exponent f3 directly fromlinear birefringence by scaling analysis. As the temperature was decreased in K2ZIlCl4 thecritical linear birefringence behavior asymptotically approach to the prediction of classical meanfield theory.
