Plasmon Instability in Strong Magnetic Fields

The problem of plasmon instability of an electron-plasnaon system is studied. When the plasmaelectron have a net drift velocity relative to the background of positive charges in the presence ofa static, strong, uniform magnetic field, it is found that the plasrnons may become unstable whencertain valtte for the drift velocity is exceeded. We have studied both the general case of arbitraryLandau quantum nurnber n and the extreme qvmantum limit, (EQL) where the electrons are allaccomodated in the lowest Landau level. In the EQL (n : 0) provided the electron cyclotronenergy is greater than the thermal energy the plasmon instal*ility occurs but it is restricted tomagnetic field values greater than a critical valtme.
