Exciton Transitions in Size-Distributed BiI_3 Microcrystallites Embedded in CdI_2 Crystals

• Size-distributed BiI3 microcrystallites embedded in Cdlz rnatrices were formed from melt-grown mixed crystals through the aggregation of BiI3 molecules by an annealing treatment at afairly low temperature. Electronic transitions in initially existing two-unolecule clusters of BiI3were analyzed on the basis of intracation transitions of the metal. The microcrystallites of BiI3have a disk-like shape of various radii with the unit layer thickness, which were directly observedby a high resolution electron rnicroscope. Absorption, luminescence and luminescence-excitationspectra for the naicrocrystallites are presented. We observed Stokes-shifted luminescence fromthe BiI3 microcrystallites for the first time. The magnitude of Stokes-shifts changes dependingon the microcrystallite size. From the results, it is concluded that the exciton-phonon interactionbecomes stronger with the decrease of the microcrystallite size.
