Zimm and Bragg t1?eory of helix:coil transition has been modified to explainorder:order transition in polynucleotides, in particular B:Z:y( -):coil transi-tions in poly (dG-dC) and poly (dG-me' dC). Lamlcda anomaly in specific heat mea-surements around the transition point have also been explained by a further modifica-tioma of the same tlxeory. Tlaeoretical results are found to be in good agreement withthe experimental data. The Nucleation parameter xvhicla deternaines the sharpness oftransition and depends on tlte extent and strength of coo)cerativity, is consistent withthe stabilization/clestabilization of the ordered states under various environmentalconditions, e.g. methylation of cytosine residue a't C5 position or change in the ca-tionic concentration of the solvent.
