Electron tunneling through a double barrier separated by a quantum well isstudied. We find that the tunneling current is described as the sum of the contribu-Lions of two distinct processes. One is due to the coherent tunneling, and the other is asequential one in which the phase coherence of the electron wave is destroyed betweentwo tunneling steps. With increasing strength of scattering in the quantum well, thedominant tunneling process changes from the coherent one to the sequential one. Wealso find that the sequential tunneling is not a single incoherent tunnel process, butconsists of three processes in which a new interference process plays an importantrole.
