Galvanomagnetic Properties of Ta_3S_2,Ta_2S and Ta_6S

The electrical resistivity, Hall effect, magnetoresistance and magnetic susceptibilityof Ta.S., Ta.S and Ta.S are reported for the first time. The Hall coefficient of Ta.S.changes its sign from positive to negative with increasing temperature. The Hallcoefficient is pronouncedly dependent on magnetic field strength below 77 K. Themagnetoresistance increases almost quadratically with the field strength below 77 K,and is still observed at 291 K. These results are interpreted in terms of two bands withthe carrier densitiy 3.0 X 10" cm ' of electrons and 7.9 X 10" cm ' of holes. Theseresults strongly suggest that Ta,S. is a semimetal with very slightly overlapping conduction and valence bands near the Fermi level. In contrast with Ta,S., the corn-pound Ta.S is a metal with hole conduction, while Ta.S is a metal with electron conduction.[tanta1um sulfides, resistivity, Hall effect, magnetoresistance, magnetic sucep- ll tibility, semimetal, metalf
