Proton Spin-Lattice Relaxation in the Quasi-One-Dimensional S=1 Heisenberg Antiferromagnet Ni (C_2H_8N_2)_2NO_2(CIO_4)

Proton spin-lattice relaxation time T. in the Haldane-g;tp system with ,5: 1,Ni(C.H.N.).N0.(CIO.), was nneasured at temperatures between 1.4 K and 77 K. Therelaxation rate T, ' decreased over more than three orders of magnitude with decreasing temperature, thus suggesting scarce development of the a?atiferromagnetic shortrange order. Monotonous decrease of T. ' above 6 K was analyzed on the basis of thetheory for insulating paramagnets using static susceptibility data. To explain thebehavior of T. ' below 6K, which accompanies a rounded )ceak, we consider theeffect of local-field fluctuation of the order of the nttclear Larmor period, which is associated with magnetic excitation from the nonmagnetic ground state.
