A geometric optical formula which describes the accommod;ttion in the human eyewithun a framework of Gaussian optics is presented. In this fox'tnula, Kepler's idea onaccommodation, which has b<:en disregarded in tlte traditioxtal theory, is correctlyrevived and the power of accommodation is represented in the florm of the sum of thecontributions of Helmholtz' and Kepler's terms. It is shoxvn that the cause ofpseudoaccommodation in pseudophakia is reasonably explained by Kepler's termalone, and the results of the ntumerical calculations on the poxx'er of accommodationin a normal eye are in good agreement with those obtainc:d by Helmholtz andGullstrand. Finally, we arrive at the surprising corxclusion th?tL the contributions ofHelmholtz' and Kepler's terms to the power of accommodaUiccn in a normal humaneye are approxumately in the ratio of 2 to l or 3 to l.
