Based on the density matrix tlteory, the kinetic and the exchautge energy densities ofa homogeneous electron gas in strong magnetic fields are evaltuated and they are expressed as functions of the electron density. The form of the kimaetic energy density isthe same as that which was given previously by Banerjee, Const;tntinescu, and Reh,tk(BCR). As to the exchange energy density, the present treatment greatly improvesthat of BCR, correcting inadequate behavior of the latter for ltigh electron density. From the energy functional which is based on thesc: energy dettsities, an alternativeThomas-Fermi-Dirac equation is derived and its numerical solutions are obtained forNe and Ne' . Through a detailed comparison of the calculated results, it is shown thatthe corrected exchange correction gives a definite improvement tupon the BCR model.
