The sufficient condition for relaxed minimurrn-energy states is derived from theenergy principle for a nonideal MHD plasma using two different processes of formula-tion. The Euler equation for the reminimization of the energy integral is derived andshown to yield the marginal stable perturbations for the sufficient condition. To defer-mine the transition point of the relaxed mode, an extended stability limit for the p=Orelaxed states is derived from the sufficient condition, using the eigenvalue analysisfor the Euler equation. The extended stability lirrtit is solved in the lst-order approx-imation to explain the deviation of the experimental stability limit from the idealizedstability limit obtained by Taylor [J. B. Taylor, R.ev. Mod. Phys. 58 (1986) 7411. Thestability limit for the finite p relaxed states is also discussed.
