Surface electronic and vibrationa[ properties of "fine" and "defective" Mg0(100) surfaces have been studied by secondary electron emission spectroscopyapplying the electron time-of-flight method and cathodoluminescence spec-troscopy under ultra-high vacuum. The energies of the bottom of the conductionband and a?1evel related closely to the F center in Mg0 are determined to be 4.0and [.6 eV above the vacuum level, respectively. Work function, which is theenergy difference between the vacuum level and the top of the valence band, ofMg0 is determined to be 3.8 eV. In the "defective" crystal, the phonon sideband due to electron-phonon coupling is resolved around the extra peak at 1.6 eVin the secondary electron emission.
