Luminescence of Pb^<2+> Centers in SrS and SrSe Phosphors

The emission and excitation spectra of the SrS: Pb" and SrSe: Pb" phos-phors were measured at low temperatures. The 'A..+"A.. emission band at374 or 392 nm is observed at 80 K in addition to the 'T.. +"A.. emission bandat 368 or 383 nm for SrS: Pb" or SrSe: Pb", respectively. On these omissionbands, phonon structures appear at 6 K. The zero-phonon line on the 'A.. +"A.. emission band grows under the external magnetic field. The sharp excitationband observed at 351 nm for SrS: Pb" or at 368 nm for SrSe: Pb" at 80 K isassigned to the A band in the isolated Pb" center. The excitation mechanismin the high energy region is explained as the transfer of the excitation energy fromthe host crystal to an unexcited Pb" ion. It is confirmed that the rigid rotatormodel which explains admixture between the 'T.. and 'A.. states is also availablefor the complex Pb"(S' )5 or Pb"(Se' ).in these phosphors.
