The time dependence of the scintillations in pure heliuna excited by alphaparticles has been measured in the pressure range of 100 to 1200 Torr by using asingle photon counting technique. The time dependence of helium scintillationin the vacuuna-ultraviolet region consists of a slow component and a fast one.The slow coutaponent emission appears to arise from two-body Frankx-Condoncollisions involving a 2"S atonnic state and from the deexcitation of the A"l:naolecular state created from three-body conversion of a 2'S state. The fastcomponent enaission arises front the deexcitation of the D'l: mo]ec?alar stateformed by three-body collisions involving a 2'P atomic state. Radiative decayconstant for the D'l : molecules is (2.2f0.2) x 10' sec '
