Long-lived highly excited hydrogen molecules (H:') were produced by low-energy electron impact on H., and allowed to collide with H.0 and SF.. Theresulting Hf tons were observed by a quadrupole mass spectrometer. It wasconfirmed by the threshold energy, 15.4.j.0.3 eV, and by field ionization thatthe precursor of Hf was the H. molecule in high Rydberg states, their principalquantum numbers being estimated to be between 20 and 40. The shape of theexcitation function suggested that Hf' molecules were mainly produced byoptically forbidden transitions. The ionization cross sections of H's' and D'!'with H.0 were estimated by the dependence of the Hf and D,7 intensities onthe H.0 pressure to be (3.8.1.1.0)XIO " and (5.541.5)XIO "cm', respec-tively. The average kinetic energy of Hf' was calculated by a TOF measurementto be 75 4 10 meV.
