Electron spin resonance study shows that holes in AgBrg.gg.Clg..g 9 crystal areself-trapped as the complexes (AgBrC] 5 )'- besides the complexes (AgC],;)'-. Thecomplex (AgBrCl,)'- has a rhombic symmetry due to a Jahn-Teller effect and to atetragonal crystal field created by a Br ligand. The energy barrier between twoconfigurations of the complex (AgBrCl 5 )' is estimated to be lower than thosebetween three configurations of the complex (AgCl5)'-, so that we can expectoccurrence of a dynamic or intermediate Jahn-Teller effect for the complex(AgBrC1,)'-. The ESR line shapes have been calculated for several values of2T/i, which represents the ratio of the tunneling splitting to the random strainsplitting. The result shows that the low-temperature ESR spectrum of the com-plex (AgBrCl.)'- is associated with an intermediate Jahn-Teller effect.
