The parametric excitation of ion waves in a weakly ionized plasma is theoretically studied when the incident pumping electric field modulates the electron drift velocity, the plasma density, and the electron temperature. The linearized hydrodynamic equations are solved in one-dimensional case and are reduced to a type of Mathieu equation. This theory explains qualitatively the experiments of the parametric excitation of the ion plasma oscillation in a weakly ionized plasma; it is concluded that in this case the effect of the modulation of the plasma density on the parametric resonance is large compared with the effect due to the modulation of the electron drift velocity and the electron temperature.
