We present total-energy electronic-structtrre calcttlations based on a transferable tight bindingnuodel perforzaaed for deforuaaed graphite sheets. It is fotrnd that folding and indentation of'graphite sheets induce pectnliar atotn-scale structural undtrlations or ripples on the sheets. Thegeneric strtuctural feattrres of the folded or indented graphite are exarnined in ternas of bandenergies and interatomic repltrlsive energies. It is also found that the local density of states ofthe deforraaed graphite shows an energy gap near the Ferraai level at cturved parts of' the graphitesheets. This gap is a consequence frorn naissing three-f'old rotational synanaetry and from naixingbetween o and m states in the defornaed graphite. We argue that the observed energy gapin scanning ttrnneling spectroscopy rneasureraaents for Heliurn adsorbed graphite is dtre to tip-indtrced defortaaation of the graphite sheets.
