Electrical Properties of Zn-Mg-RE (RE=Y,Gd) Icosahedral Quasicrystals

Tlte electrical resistivity and the rrragnetoresistance have beerr nueasured ['or icosahedral phasesof lZn -Mg -RE (RE:Y,Gd). Blectrical resistivities of btrlk sarnples of ZI156NI&36Y8, annealedribbon samples of' ZIl62M&30Y8 and azanealed ribbon sarnples of Zn55IVIg35.5Gdg.5 are 1 l'l1QClTl,0.3 rnQcm and 0.3 rnQcna, respectively. The resistivities of all the sarnples decrease by 5 " T'A,from 4.2 K to 273 K. Atlow ternperatures, tlae condtmctivity of'Zr'r- lN4g-Y obeys T"' dejcendence,while the resistivity of Zn -lVIg -Gd o1.ceys In T dependence, where Gd atoraus bear naagnetic 1110-rtaents. In Zn -lN4g-Y, the taaagnetoresistance is negative and insensitive to ternperattrre, xvhile inZn -IVIg -Gd it is positive in a low field range and b ecoutues negative at high field with its rnagnittrdelarger at lower temperature. These restrlts are interpreted Yay the theories of electron-electroninteraction, weak localization and s-d exclaange interaction.
